Full Description: Gupta Dynasty, Kumaragupta I alias Mahendraditya (415-455 CE), Gold Dinar, "Archer" type, Without 'Ku', Obv: the king standing and facing left, encircled by a nimbus. In his left hand, he holds a longbow, while his right hand grips an arrow, adjacent to the king, a Garuda standard is prominently displayed in the left field, the Brahmi legend inscribed reads as "(Paramarajadhiraja, Sri-Kumara)gupta," with the letter 'Gu' positioned above the king's right hand and 'Pta' above the Garuda, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi facing forward and seated in padmasana upon a lotus, she holds a diadem in her right hand and a long-stemmed lotus in her left hand, the Brahmi legend "Sri Mahendra" is inscribed in the right field, tamgha on the upper-left field, 7.97g, 17.53mm, (Variant of Altekar, Bayana Hoard # Pl. X-7/TGE, S. Kumar # Class IV-Var. A.2), about extremely fine, Very Rare. Note: The obverse features a distinctive absence of the Brahmi letter 'Ku' beneath the king's arm. On the reverse side, the goddess's hand gracefully cradles a fully bloomed lotus, adding an exquisite touch to this remarkable example. |
