Full Description: Maratha, श्री छत्र पति, Shree Chhatrapati, Gold Fanam, Obv: degenerated figure of Kali, Rev: shree chhatrapati in devnagari legend as (श्री छत्र पति), probably struck by tanjore marathas, complete legend, 0.30g, 6.88mm, about extremely fine, probably unpublished, Unique. The so-called Kali-fanams were struck at several places. Looking at this type it looks like seeing the Kali that it is from Madura origin. Two places Tanjore and Gingee are possibly the best places. At both the places coins were issued with "Sri Chhatrapati" (श्री छत्र पति),. Hans Herrli suggests that the Shri Raja Chhatrapati coins (in Mitchiner South India, I, 243) were struck by Venkoji. But this type is quite different, but as Chhatrapati was a title shared by all the Rajas of Tanjore, it could be an issue of the Marathas of Tanjore. On the other hand Gingee also issued coins with the inscription "Chhatrapati". The "Rama Raya" fanams, from which the Dutch copied the Negapatnam fanams, were struck at Tanjore and not at Gingee. |
