Full Description: Gujarat Sultanate, Nasir ud-Din Mahmud Shah I, Muhammadabad urf Champanir, Gold Tanka, AH 902, Obv: "al wathiq bitayid -ur rahman" legend, Rev: mahmud shah al sultan khallada mulkahu, 11.60g, 22.40mm, (G&G # G 78), about very fine, Extremely Rare. Goron and Goenka lists this as RRR on the rarity scale. Saurashtra
was won by Mahmud I and he consolidated the Sultanate of Gujarat then. Champanir
(Muhammadabad) was also called as Shehr-e-Mukkaram which means the great city.
Now known as Champaner is located in Panchmahal district of Gujarat, 47
kilometers from Vadodara; this city was briefly the capital of Gujarat during the rule of Sultans. It was
captured on 21st November 1484 after a siege lasting 20 months and Mahmud spent
the next twenty years modifying and embellishing the fort with many buildings. |
