Full Description: Chalukyas of Kalyana, Jayasimha II 'Jagadekamalla', Gold Pagoda (Presentation Issue?), Punch Marked Type, Broad Flan, Obv: total 9 punches, 5 punches of mythical lion all facing towards right at 2 in left, 2 in right and 1 in center, a punch of temple at right bottom, two punches of "shri in kannada legend as ಶ್ರೀ" at left and right each, a punch of three kannada letters "ba, gae, va "ಬಾ ಗ ವ"", Rev: traces of obverse symbols, 3.9g, 29.47mm, about extremely fine, unlisted, Exceedingly Rare. This is a very special specimen of Chalukyas with a broad flan thus may be assumed that it would have been struck for the presentation issue or commemoration issue. In the Mitcihner records it is observed that most of the coins from these series have lions facing towards left but in this all punches have lions facing towards right. The coin is such well and deep struck that it has clearly left the impressions of the punches of obverse on reverse as well. This typical reverse has not been noted or studied earlier amongst the collectors. A very important piece for South India coin collectors. |
