Full Description:

Gupta Dynasty, Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, Complete Dies, King and Queen Type (Licchavyah), Slender Style (Early Issue?), issued in the memory of his parents Chandragupta I and Kumaradevi, Obv: king standing at right and queen at left facing each other with the crescent between both of them, king is seen gifting /feeding the queen or to be more appropriate offering the sindoordani to the queen with his right hand,  left hand at the back holding a stick, brahmi legends at left  "srikumaradevi"  and "chandra" in the right field, Rev: goddess ambika seated on couched lion facing to left with no mat under the feet, holding cornucopia and pasha with brahmi legend "Lichhavyah" at right to commemorate the marriage alliance of Chandragupta I with the Kumaradevi of the Lichhavi tribe, tamgha at left, 7.64g, 19.30mm, (Altekar, Bayana Hoard # Pl. I-3), about extremely fine, Very Rare Type in the series.

Altekar attributes the famous King and Queen type to Chandra Gupta I and he does not categorise it further in any class or variety like he has done in the other Gupta coins. So the major differential feature of this coin is that the presence of crescent between the king and queen with the addition of “Sri” in the queen’s name. The variety where lion on reverse faces left is much rarer than the one where it faces right.

This specimen is struck with the complete dies as the tail and feet of lion is fully visible. And queen is seen in the tribhanga standing posture on the obverse where her both legs are on the specimen which usually get omitted in this series coins.
