Full Description:

Roman Empire, Septimius Severus (193-211 AD), Gold Aureus, Obv: laureate draped and cuirassed bust right, SEVERVS – PIVS AVG -PMTRPXII, Rev: goddess dea caelestis is riding right on a lion, holding thunderbolt in right hand and scepter in left, below water gushes from rock, INDVLGEN – TIA AVGG - INCARTH, 7.09g, 20.25mm, (David R S # 6285), about extremely fine, Very Rare.

The rare type, INDVLGENTIA AVGG IN CARTH (‘the indulgence of the Augusti towards Carthage’), suggests Septimius Severus and Caracalla made improvements to Carthage, the North African capital to the west of the imperial family’s native Tripolitana. It seems the imperial family and its entourage crossed to Africa in 202, a few months after they had returned to Rome from a five-year absence in the East.
