Full Description: Travancore, Tulabharam Issue (1870-1931 AD), Gold ½ Pagoda, Obv: conch within wreath, Rev: "Sri Padmanabha" in Malayalam, within a wreath and dotted circular border, 1.52g, 13.5mm, (KM # X10, Beena Sarasan # T6)), choice extremely fine, jewel loop, Very Rare. Thulabharam coins or Thulapurusha danam coins was a ceremony performed by weighing the body of the King against an equal weight in gold and distributing them among the Brahmins. The gold procured for this was purified and coined in different sizes and weights with the inscription “Sree Padmanabha”, the family deity of the Travancore rulers. |
