Full Description: Rohilkhand, Murtazabad Mint, Silver Rupee, AH 1187/14 RY, In the name of Shah Alam II, Obv: Sikka Mubarak Shah Alam Badshah Ghazi Shah Alam & sana 1187 hijri at bottom, Rev: sana 14 julus, maimanat manus & zarb Murtazabad completely visible at the top, arrow mark in manus of letter sin, 11.2g, 21.90mm, (Unlisted mint in KM), about extremely fine, Extremely Rare. Murtazabad is a small Village in Mufti Ganj Tehsil in Jaunpur District of Uttar Pradesh. It is located in the Varanasi Division,19 KM towards East from District head quarters Jaunpur. Such a mint name existed only on the Maratha coin of the Maharashtra area which was the name given to Miraj. The occurrence of similar names during the 18th -19thcentury from Uttar Pradesh is a good addition to numismatic knowledge. This specimen was found with coins of Murtazabad and hence it is a part of a currency bag from Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. As the coin was found it is certain that it was minted by the Rohillas, most probably by Hafiz Rahmat Khan. The same mint was sold in our auction no 22 for 50000 INR. |
