Denomination | Anna 1/12 | Mint | Madras
Metal | Copper | Year (AD) | 1835
Full Description: 1835, East India Company, Copper 1/12 Anna, Madras Mint, 13 berries (6L+7R), (Unlisted in PR, S&W/GK # 77), graded & slabbed by NGC as MS 62 BN, Exceedingly Rare. In the year 1835 the dies prepared for Madras mint were first made erroneously without noticing the mistake. The M of COMPANY was UPSIDE-DOWN and inscribed as W in COWPANY. This error was corrected later to COMPANY and new dies were made. Plausibly to meet the urgent requirements the erroneous die was repaired and used for time being which is an example of transitional die usage where the W was removed and repaired to M by mint master. This coin clearly shows the traces of W under M of COMPANY and was possibly struck in the early stage. NGC slab mentions M/W (M over W) on it. A classic example of a Transitional die in top grade. |
