Full Description: 1840, William IIII, Silver Mule Rupee, F Raised, Unique. Note:
While all Silver Rupee colins struck during the reign of William III show the date 1835, specimens of rupee coin bearing the date '1840' were minted, even though the King died on 20th Jume 1837. A possible explanation for the anomaly may be that the initial idea had been to continueWilliam IIII reverse design for the subsequent Queen Victoria coinage as well. So a 'punch' obtained from the '1835 reverse punch' with the date changed to '1840' was prepared at the Royal Mint, and along with a new obverse 'punch' (with the queen's effigy), was sent to Indian Mints. But, for some reason there were second thoughts regarding the acceptability of the obverse design, and a directive was subsequently issued not to use it until further orders. Meanwhile, possibly to tide over a shortage of rupee coins, the mint authorities in India thought of striking some quantity of the coin pairing the new reverse die (dated 1840) with the left over obverse dies of William IIII 1835 Coinage. |
