Full Description: Burma, Mon Kingdom of Dvaravati (300-450/550 AD), Hamsavati (Pegu), Silver Unit (88 Rattis), Obv: a conventionalized conch-shell (shankha) within a solid circular bead and a concentric beaded border around the field, Rev: a simplified dynastic symbol, i.e, a linear Srivatsa with a stupa inside, Bhadrapitha on the left and another symbol on the right, crescent moon and sun on top, 9.23g, 25.1mm, (Mitch. # 98/Auspicious symbols and Ancient Coins, Than Htun # Pg. No. 75), choice very fine, Rare. Note: The Mon kingdom of Dvaravati existed between the 3rd and 11th century AD and its territory extended from present-day Thailand's central Chaopya basin in the south up to Lumpun on the north and from across the lower part of Burma towards the east to the Bay of Bengal to the west. It was the first Mon kingdom established in what is now Thailand and played an important role in spreading Indic culture in the region. Situated in the lower Chao Phraya River valley, Dvaravati was prevented by geographic barriers from establishing close political ties with other Mon states to the west in southern Myanmar (Burma) and northern Thailand. |
