Full Description: Punch Marked Coin, Shakya Janapada (600-500 BC), Narhan Hoard type, Silver 5 Shana, Scyphate, Obv: a single bold punched symbol consisting of dotted crescents flanking a ‘Y’ shaped motif in the center, banker’s marks including a spoked wheel, pentagon and other ancillary symbols around the field, Rev: uniface, 6.86g, 42.88x34.2mm, (Rajgor Series 33 # 534/T. Hardekar, 2019 # NH 14), choice very fine, Rare. Note: The pentagon symbol generally appears prominently as the central punch, but this specimen displays this motif as a relatively smaller banker’s mark. Shinji Hirano does not list the type in his book The Ghaghara-Gandak River Region C. 600 – 300 B.C. Archaic Silver Punch Marked Coinage (IIRNS Publications, 2007) |
