Full Description: Rohilkhand, Ghausgarh Mint, 'pseudo' mint name Najibabad, Silver Rupee, AH (119)5/22 RY, "Saya-e-fazle elah" Couplet, In the name of Shah Alam II, Obv: Persian legend “sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya-e-fazle elah, hami deen-e-Muhammad Shah Alam Badshah”, Rev: Persian legend “sana 22 julus" & "zarb Najibabad" at the top, a trident & a vertical daggar or katar mint marks at the bottom,11.20g, 21.00mm, (Date & mintmarks unlisted for the type in KM), choice extremely fine, Scarce. Note: The seat of the Rohillas; Najibabad, was lost to Awadh in 1774. The seat of Najib Khan’s family was then moved to Ghausgarh, a fortress buit by Najib Khan in 1765. Coins dated from 1188/16 Ry are known with the mintmark fish, for Awadh to the right of the Ry. A parallel series of coins are known of ‘Najibabad’ mint with the mintmark of a Katar of the Rohillas. It’s suggested that those coins were probably struck by the Rohillas at their fort at Ghausgarh. |
