Full Description: Bharatpur, Post-Mughal Potentates, Alinagar Mint, Silver Rupee, AH 1193/21 RY, "Saya-e-fazle elah" Couplet, In the name of Shah Alam II, Obv: Persian legend "sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya-e -fazle elah, hami din-e-Muhammad, Shah Alam Badshah", with the Hijri year 1193, Rev: Persian legend "sana 21 julus" & "zarb Alinagar" at the top, with a mace & star symbol, 11.00g, 23.00mm, (Unlisted in KM), about very fine, Extremely Rare. Note: The location of the mint is not determined, but would be somewhere in the Braj-country, occupied by the Marathas known with regnal years 21, 23, 24 and 26. Alinagar was a small fiefdom, ruled by a Nawab, to the East of Bharatpur. When this coin was struck, Zulfiqar Khan was the Nawab, and they were tributaries to the Jats of Bharatpur. The exact location of this Mint is still unknown, but the type and style of struck suggest these coins must be struck somewhere in the Bharatpur area. |
