Full Description: Gupta Dynasty, Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, "King and Queen" type (Lichchhavayah), issued in the memory of his parents Chandragupta I and Kumaradevi, Obv: the king, nimbate, wearing a short tunic, standing to the right facing the queen standing on the left, the king offering a ring to queen?, both have a halo over their heads, the king does not wear a diadem on his head, and a crescent is visible between the king and the queen, the Brahmi legend "Kumaradevi Shri" on the left field behind the queen,"Chandra" and "Gupta" in the right field divided by a crescent standard which is held in the king's left hand, Rev: the goddess Durga seated in the paralambapadasana on a "recumbent Lion facing left", with her feet resting on a circular mat below, holding a cornucopia and a pasha, a tamgha on the left field, the Brahmi legend ("Lichchhavayah") on the right field and a dotted border around the field, 7.50g, 20.26mm, (variant of BMC # Pl. III-10/variant of TOTGE, S. Kumar # Class II-Var. B.5, Unlisted in Altekar), choice very fine, Very Rare. Note: The obverse legend on this specimen reads Kumaradevi Shri instead of usual Shri Kumaradevi, this type is Very Rare. |
