Full Description: Pandyas of Madurai (12-13 Century CE), Copper Unit, Obv: an anthropomorphic Garuda kneeling on the back of a fish, flanked by a conch and a discus, holding a serpent in the left hand, Rev: Tamil Granth/Kannada legend "Samara Kolahala", 1.75g, 15.63mm, (Coins of South India, Elliot # Pl.3- 135), about very fine, Extremely Rare. Note: The figure of Garuda on the back of the fish (Pandya dynastic symbol), with the adjuncts of the Shankha and Chakra, all allude to attributes of Vishnu; along with the legend "Samara Kolahala", meaning "Din of War", seems to hint that the change from Shivaite tenets had been brought about by violence. |
