Full Description: Indo Portuguese, Chaul, D. Sebastiao (1557-1578 AD), Copper 4 Bazaruco, Obv: stylized Portuguese coat-of-arms, Rev: three bundled arrows and a bow, symbolizing the Christian saint Sebastian, 17.2g, 21.08mm, about very fine, Extremely Rare. Note: Chaul is located in the Northern Konkan region and emerged as an important trading hub in the medieval period. The Portuguese established a colony at Chaul in the year 1521 and it remained in their control until Peshwa Bajirao liberated the entire North Konkan in a concerted anti-Portuguese campaign in 1740. 4 Bazaruccos is the heaviest denomination in this series struck at Chaul, and it is rarely offered in our sales. |
