Full Description: Pallavas of Kanchi (4-6 Century CE), Lead Unit, Obv: an upright bull facing right, the Brahmi legend "Pakatasa..." above with a Srivatsa symbol, a beaded border around the field, Rev: a ship with two masts, 5.75g, 17.5mm, (Unlisted), choice extremely fine, Exceedingly Rare. Note: The dominance of Pallava in the Southern region was significant during its period. Their coins are generally found in copper and potin metal bearing the Pallava bull on the obverse. This symbol is generally seen in their monuments, particularly on the walls surrounding the shore temple at Mamallapuram. It was Sir Walter Elliot, in 1858, who brought attention to the lead coins and attributed them to the “Princes of the Pallava race”. Only a few handful lead coins of the Pallava dynasty are known to be in existence. This type is the only known coin in lead, with Brahmi legends “Pakatasa....” present above bull in obverse and a ship at the reverse. A highly important coin that is exceedingly rare, this is the first time it is being offered in any auction. |
