Full Description: Akbar (AH 963-1014/1556-1605 AD), Agra Mint, Silver Nazarana Rupee, Over struck on Suri Dynasty coin?, Elahi 47, Month Bahman (Aquarius), Obv: Arabic legend “Jallu Jalalhu Allahu Akbar”, Rev: Persian legend month “Bahman” at the top, “zarb Agra” & “Elahi 47” at the bottom, 11.31g, 28.31mm, (KM # 93.1), no test marks, floral decorative background on both sides, with some flan defect, choice extremely fine, Very Rare. Note: The rupee seems to be struck on a Suri undertype as evident from the traces below. Copper coins of Akbar are well known to have been struck on Suri host. It seems that there must have been shortage of metal at Agra mint in the year 47 and 48 when the need for using Suri rupees arose. To accommodate the large flans of the Suri rupees, an equally large die of the Akbar’s design was specially engraved. The two rupees offered here are a testimony to such an event at the royal mint of Agra, thus the very large flan or nazarana Rupees of Akbar came into existence. |
