Full Description: Tripura Kingdom, Vijaya Manikya (SE 1454-1486/1532-1564 AD) Silver Tanka/Rupee, Saka Era1476, citing Queen Sarasvati, Obv: a lion walking to the right, standard above, date below all within a large circle and without ornamental border, Rev: Bengali legend "Dhvaja Ghata Sna/yi Sri Sri Vija/ya Manikya De/va Sri Sarasva/ti Maha Devayu" in five lines, within a square with ornamental border, 9.46g, 22.82mm, (Variant of KM # 65/RB # 105), countermark, about very fine, Extremely Rare. Note: As per Rajamala, Vijaya Manikya took advantage of the prolonged conflict between the Mughal King Akbar and the Sultan of Bengal, and proceeded to Sonargaon or Suvarnagram in Dacca and occupied it for some time. After this successful raid in Muslim territory, he is said to have struck coins commemorating his holy bath on Dhvaja Ghat at the banks of the Brahmaputra river. It reads Dhvaja Ghata snayi Sri Sri Vijaya Manikya Deva Sri Sarasvati Mahadevyau. |
