Full Description: Early medieval North Maharashtra, Harishchandra Dynasty, King Bhogashakti (700-720 CE), Copper Base Alloy Unit, Nasik-Khandesh area, Vishnukundin type, Obv: a roaring lion standing facing right with one foreleg raised, its tail curled towards its back, Rev: an elephant standing facing right, the Brahmi legend "Shri Bhoga" above, 2.03g, 15.78mm, (Unlisted & Unpublished), sharp strike, green deposits aesthetically cleaned, about extremely fine, Extremely rare. Note: Bhogashakti is known from two sets of copper plate grants found in the village of Anjaneri, near Trimbakeshwar. Both are now in the collection of the IIRNS, Nasik. It is evident from the inscriptions that the family name of Bhogashakti was 'Harishchandra' and his alias was 'Prithivichandra'. No coins of this dynasty were known before and the discovery of these coins takes our understanding of the numismatic landscape of medieval Maharashtra a step further. |
