Full Description: Chalukyas of Kalyana, Jayasimha II "Jagadekamalla" (10 Century CE), Punch Marked Gold Gadyana, Obv: punch marks including a stylized representation of a temple with a cluster of dots, pallets, sun, and crescent besides, Kannada letter 'Bha' above, the Kannada legend “ (Ja)gadeka ja(gadeka)" conjoined but in the retrograde form, with a dotted line on top and two punches of “Shri” on the sides, Rev: a single banker’s mark, 3.71g, 19.10mm, (Nidhi. Vol. 2, 2007 # Ch. 7), choice superb quality, Gem UNC, Extremely Rare. Note: The gold coins attributed to this ruler generally bear five lions on it, however, this type has the Kannada letter 'Bha'. It is attributed to Jagadekamalla on the basis of symbols found on similar coins in one such hoard by H. Krishna Sastri who was able to read Kannada legends forming: Jaga, Jagade, and Jagadeka. The Kannada letter 'Bha' above the temple represents the first letter of the Hindu cyclic year 'Bhava' as it was the practice known from the Goa Kadamba coins of the same period. |
