Full Description: Vijayanagara Empire, Aravidu Dynasty, Feudatory Issue, Sri Rangaraya III (1642-1686 CE)/Kings of Chandragiri or Penukonda, Gold Fanam, Obv: the Vadakkalai Namam (Vaishnavite symbol) on a pedestal, flanked by a discus (chakra) and a conch-shell (shankha), Rev: the Nagari legend "Shri Ramga/ Rayaru" in two lines, 0.37g, 7.56mm, (Unlisted in Mitchiner), about extremely fine, Extremely Rare. Note: Dr. Girijapathi has incorrectly attributed the reverse of this type to 'Degenerated Kali'. It is the Vadakkalai Namam (a Vaishnavite symbol) used by the rulers of the Vijayanagar Empire offering their respect to God Venkateshwara Swami (Lord Balaji). This is offered for the first time in any auction. |
