Full Description: Chalukyas of Kalyana, Somesvara I (Trailokyamalla) (10 Century CE), Silver Drachma, Obv: a roaring lion facing left with foreleg raised, Rev: Nagari legend "Sri Traillo/kya Malla/(Deva)" in three lines, 1.97g, 10.98mm, (Unlisted in major publications), about very fine, Exceedingly Rare. Note: Somesvara succeeded his father Jayasimha II. He led military expeditions to Central India, Gujarat, Konkan, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamilnadu and subdued various local and imperial dynasties. Silver coins of the Chalukyas are virtually unknown and only a handful have surfaced so far. Their typology suggests that coins of this type became predominant in the 11th to 13th Century and were issued by a number of rulers of other dynasties like the Yadavas. |
