The city of Machilipatnam, also known as Bandar or Machhlipatnam / Masulipatnam, is a major port in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. The city is nestled on the Coromandel Coast of India. There is a rich historical background to this city in Indian history, and it was dominated by the Dutch, French, and British over a period of time. As a major seaport, it served as a gateway for their trade.

The first factory was established in 1669 by the French after obtaining a patent from the Sultan of Golkonda. In the course of Aurangzeb's conquest of Bijapur, he is said to have captured most of the prominent cities in the south and parts of them.
