Full Description: Rohilkhand, Ghausgarh Mint, pseudo mint name Najibabad Mint, Gold Mohur, AH (119)7 /24 RY, “Saya-e-fazle elah” Couplet, In the name of Shah Alam II, Obv: Persian legend "Sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya e fazle elah, hami din-e Muhammad Shah Alam Badshah", with a peculiar leaf symbol in 'Mi' of Hami, Rev: Persian legend "sana 24 julus" & "zarb Najibabad" almost visible at the top & a katar as mint mark, minor gash on edge, otherwise, AU-UNC, Very Rare. Note: The seat of the Rohillas, Najibabad, was lost to Awadh in 1774. The seat of Najib Khan's family was then moved to Ghausgarh, a fortress built by Najib Khan in 1765. Coins dating from 1188/16 Ry are known with the mintmark fish for Awadh to the right of the Ry. A parallel series of coins are known from 'Najibabad' mint with the mintmark of a Katar of the Rohillas. It's suggested that those coins were probably struck by the Rohillas at their fort at Ghausgarh. |
