Full Description: Gupta Dynasty, Chandragupta III (496-500 CE), Gold Dinar, "Archer-Garuda with Snake and Crescent" type, Obv: the king standing, nimbate, facing left, king in dhoti and wearing a waist cloth (sash) hanging down from a knot, holding a longbow in his left hand and an arrow in his right, a ribbonned Garuda standard on the left field, a snake in Garuda's neck, a crescent between Garuda standard and head of the king, Brahmi legend “Chandra" below the king's arm, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi, nimbate, facing forward and seated in the padmasana posture on a seven-petaled lotus, holding a diadem in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand, whose stem is coming from inside the hand resting on her thigh, a crescent positioned above her head, a tamgha in the left field, the Brahmi legend ("Sri Vikramah") in the right field, 8.3g, 16.79mm, (TGE, S. Kumar # Var. A.2), choice very fine, Extremely Rare. Note: A distinctive feature of this coin is the presence of a moon or crescent positioned between the king's face and Garuda. Additionally, the coin exhibits a serpent twirled around the neck of Garuda, possibly depicting a scene from the renowned Garuda-Naga story. |
