Full Description: Madras Presidency, Silver 4 Annas, 1808 AD, Edge: Oblique Milling, Obv: value in Persian chahar Anna rupia within a circle, on the garter value in English Four Annas, Rev: value in Telugu in two lines separated by a bead surrounded by a ribbon, the ends of which are separated by a star, on the ribbon is the value in Tamil, 2.93g, 15mm, (Paul Stevens # 3.352/ PR # 305), about extremely fine, Extremely Rare. The 4 and the 2 Annas were struck on the rupee standard but are different in style to the fractions of the Madras Arkat rupee. They were introduced to relieve the pressure on copper coins in the Circars and the entire minting was shipped to Masulipatam. |
