Full Description: 1854, Half Anna Stamp on Cover (1+1), Die I "A" Stone on Cover, Bellary to Madras, addressed to BISHOP of Madras, 22nd March 1855, Delivered in Morning post, in Box Seal "AM", posted from Ballary on 17th March 1954, very lightly used, Extremely Rare. Note: This cover and an additional stamp are excellently arranged, mounted and displayed in a collector’s exhibit style. Christian missionary activity in the Indian sub-continent during the 19th century, was fervent and sustained. A large portion of surviving correspondence from the period was the result of communications among missionaries within India and with their supporters overseas. This elegant little folded letter addressed to Bishop of Madras on 22th March 1855 according to the Red Madras General Post Office postmark on the reverse. It was delivered via the morning post as noted by a black boxed "AM" postmark also on the reverse. The letter was posted in Bellary on 17th March. The stamp is a somewhat worn impression of the one-half anna die I with a light type 1 (Renouf/Cooper) cancellation, the diamond of dots 9 bt 9. It is from position 91 of lithographic stone "A", printed in May 1854. |
