Full Description: Tea Token, Anglo American Direct Tea Trading Company, Bronze, 3 Annas, Obv: A. A. initials, Rev: denomination value, 3.23g, 22.97mm, (PR # 4A), about extremely fine, Extremely Rare. Note: According to Pridmore's book, this was first recorded in 1895 CE and was provisionally attributed to the Ceylon Estate token series. It has been impossible to trace any company or estate in Ceylon whose name corresponds to the initials A.A. However, research and its monetary value suggest that it was issued by Anglo-American Direct Tea Trading Co. of Nellampatty, Malabar (Kerala) in Southern India. Throughout South India, the company owned tea, coffee, and cardamom estates. In Assam, they also owned tea gardens. They were represented by Finlay, Muir & Co. in Calcutta. |
